Women-led Croydon fintech co transfers over £40 billion a year for 40 years

Hidden in the outskirts of Croydon, Automated Payments Transfer (APT) Ltd’s office has been buzzing every day since 1977.

Led by London native Kanchan Kamdar, APT LTD created iConnect, a BACS (Bankers Automated Clearing System) approved payment service for the processing of direct debit and direct credit in the UK. iConnect was the first cloud hosted solution in the UK and processes over 40 million payments annually, with a value of over £40 billion.

Every day thousands of businesses rely on BACS payments providers to pay their suppliers and employee salaries, or collect subscription fees. Direct credit and direct debit are the main ways to execute these payments.

Kanchan jokes: “Sometimes when I think about these numbers, I feel like I won’t be able to sleep at night. My company’s mission is to provide uncompromising cash flow efficiency for all our clients, and once we moved to the cloud and were able to track payments traffic information, the numbers just hit me.”

Kanchan says she is incredibly proud of how far APT has come, but there’s no time to rest on her laurels. Taking into account the number of payments being processed every day, APT’s team spends most of their time on improving cyber security. According to Cybersecurity Ventures, cyber crime will cost the world £4.9 trillion annually by 2021, so customers’ trust in their payment solution is vital for our business. That’s why we just got ISO 27001 certification to give our customers extra confidence that their money transactions are safe with us.

Surprisingly, APT is an old kid on the block. The company has been around for the last 40 years. Kanchan first started working for APT in 2004 as a Sales and Marketing Manager. She took over the company in 2007 and quickly realised that fintech is one of the few domains today that brings together two traditionally male-dominated fields – finance and technology.

“What I find disappointing and still experience, is that when people hear my name Kanchan Kamdar, they are not sure if it’s male or female? With the job title Managing Director against it, the assumption is ‘male’! Therefore, any sales call that dare ask for Mr Kanchan Kamdar, everyone knows not to pass the call onto me, as they should have done their research and not make that assumption.”

“APT’s company culture has always been very inclusive. 50% of our staff are female, developers included. This is something we are incredibly proud of (it happened naturally!) and it helps to create a harmonious balance in the team. At APT we try to foster a balanced life, so we have a kind of informal flexible working environment. Obviously, it must work in terms of the job that has to be done, I try to make it workable and this means everyone can fit their jobs around their lifestyle.”

I strongly believe that our company’s culture is the key to business success. APT has been in business for more than 4 decades and we still have dozens of customers who have been using us for more than 25 years! We have a strong expansion strategy and the next 5 years will be really exciting for us. To find out more, send us a message or connect with us:
